The Quantum 2 is the ultimate high power hair removal laser. The key to pain free hair removal is to get sufficient energy (heat) into hair follicle before it has had time to escape and then STOP. The Quantum 2 can do this because of its 2800Watt output and keep on supplying this level of power throughout the working day due to its excellent refrigeration system.
A quantum is a discrete package of energy and that is fundamental to how our Quantum range works. The key to pain free hair removal is to quickly deliver just the right amount of energy to the target and then stop, while at the same time cooling the epidermis.
Previous generation diode lasers were not powerful enough to do this quickly enough. Delivering a single long pulse, even with head cooling was painful due to the leakage of heat into the surrounding tissue.
By delivering the energy very quickly into the hair follicle there is little time for the heat to leak out, the hair follicle therefore reaches a temperature high enough to denature the protein, with typically 50% less energy delivered. Then as the name “Quantum” implies the energy delivery is stopped.
The energy continues to escape from the follicle but as it does the temperature drops because there is no new energy flowing in. The net result is that the hair follicle has been damaged while the surrounding tissue remains relatively cool.
The Quantum 2 is equipped with a powerful refrigeration system and cooled sapphire window through which the beam passes. The sapphire window is kept at a temperature just above freezing to prevent ice formation. The melanosomes, melanocytes and nerve sensors are all very small objects, in effect floating in a 70% water bath that is just 0.14mm thick called the epidermis. This is easily cooled by the Quantum 2 cooling tip as the laser is fired and the small objects rapidly lose their heat into the water bath.
In contrast the hair follicle is typically 30,000 times larger than the small objects and cannot dissipate the energy as quickly. It therefore get hot to the point where the follicle tissue is denatured and dies.
In older generation diode lasers it is the heat trapped by the hair follicle and then conducted into the surrounding skin that added to the incident heat and resulted in pain. That element is virtually eliminated in the Quantum method which uses about 50% less energy to give pain free, predictable results.
In the Professional Mode the user has complete control of all aspects of the machine.
For the less experienced user there are several modes available to guide the user to the best operating parameters, depending upon treatment requirements and user preference.
When using any of the smart modes the user simply has to select the following:
Gender
Fitzpatrick skin type
Hair – thickness, density and colour
Area – to be treated
Preferred operating mode and pulse rate
When a smart mode is selected the user then selects the area to be treated followed by the preferred pulse repetition rate.
In any of the settings the machine will adjust the pulse duration and present a suitable range of fluences.
Repetition rates of 1 to 3Hz are intended for a stamp or glide approach. The high power density output of the Quantum 2 ensures effective, comfortable hair removal in a single pulse.
Repetition rates of 5-10Hz are for use in SHR mode, often preferred for treating larger areas such as legs or men’s backs. In this mode the total energy to be delivered into the area and the selected fluence, define the treatment time for each section. At the end of this time the machine will stop pulsing. The operator is able to adjust this if required.
